ARTBOOT CAMP 1 with TIM MCBURNIE (COMPULSORY FOR 1ST TERM 2D STREAM FULL TIME STUDENTS)

ART BOOT CAMP 1 will push your understanding of drawing and art fundamentals. Tim Mcburnie will take you through a series of intensive assignments aimed at developing your foundation skills. You will focus on learning Advanced Perspective, Anatomy, Form Drawing, Shading, Posing Characters, Lighting and Color Theory. The course is designed to help artists of all levels. However, dedication will be important as the workload is high, and you will be expected to complete each week's assignment on time. Regardless of your skill level, If you stick with it, your fundamental skills will improve and you will become more confident when dealing with the technical aspects of art. This course is the one to take if you are serious about working professionally as a commercial artist. Having a strong foundation is a key part of dealing with the daily challenges you will face when working on professional jobs. Tim works in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard Entertainment, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast.

Art BOOT CAMP 2 will build on the fundamentals from Bootcamp 1. Giving added complexity to the assignments. The course structure remains the same; but each week we delve deeper into our subject matter. INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING & CHARACTER DESIGN with TIM MCBURNIE

International comic book artist Tim McBurnie takes you through the world of sketching, drawing and character design. Tim works in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast. In this 8 week class Tim will guide you through the the basics of drawing and character design. Topics will include perspective, drawing simple forms in 3d space and drawing in photoshop. There will also be a focus on designing and constructing your own characters. This course is aimed at beginners and will give you the perfect foundation for your art career.

EACH WEEK you will watch a demo of the instructor painting LIVE, paint along with the instructor and ask questions. After each class you will receive your homework assignment for the week and at the beginning of each class you will receive feedback on your work/assignments.

DRAWING FOUNDATIONS with D.M.CORNISH

8 Weeks - Tuesday Afternoons 1.00pm - 4.00pm (3 hrs weekly)

Critically acclaimed artist and writer D.M. Cornish takes you through the world of sketching, drawing and painting for character design and book illustration. David is the illustrator and author of the award winning novel series Monster Blood Tatoo and has also illustrated numerous children’s books and worked as an illustrator within the advertising industry. This course is designed to teach and introduce to students the fundamentals of drawing traditionally on paper. David will cover topics such as the fundamentals of drawing, anatomy, perspective, and composition. In each class you will be seeing traditional drawing demonstrations so make sure you bring along your sketchbook, pens, pencils and markers to follow along.

EACH WEEK you will watch a demo of the instructor drawing LIVE, draw along with the instructor and ask questions. After each class you will receive your homework assignment for the week and at the beginning of each class you will receive feedback on your work/assignments.

VEHICLE MODELLING in MAYA with JARED EMBLEY

In this class Rising Sun Pictures Jared Embley will take you through step by step, the process of creating hard surface models and vehicles in Maya. Jared has 8 years professional VFX experience working on projects such as: The Hunger Games, Battle Los Angeles, The Golden CompassThe Wolverine, I, Frankenstein, The Seventh Son and many more. Jared will cover topics such as; hard surface modelling, gathering refernce for modelling, model topology, edge flow, loops, UV layout, texture painting, UV textures and creating production ready models for use in feature film VFX.

EACH WEEK you will watch a demo of the instructor modelling LIVE, model along with the instructor and ask questions. After each class you will receive your homework assignment for the week and at the beginning of each class you will receive feedback on your work/assignments.

3D ANIMATION with ANDREW KUNZEL

8 Weeks - Wednesday Mornings 9.00am - 12.00pm (3 hrs)

Over the last 5 years Andrew Kunzel has spent much of his time animating and also animation directing two television series for the ABC, Horace In Slow Motion and Figaro Pho. He has also animated in the films Scooby Doo, Ghost Ship and the Black Gates sequence in The Return of the King. Andrew will be demonstrating some of the fundamental principles of animation with an emphasis on how to make that process creative and fun.
We will be covering animation concepts like “key frames”, “timing and spacing”, “overlapping action”, as well as the more general story telling and acting performance skills plus the software skills needed in Maya. This course is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with some animation experience.”

3D BOOTCAMP with ANDREW KUNZEL

8 Weeks - Wednesday 12.30pm - 4.30pm & Thursday 12.30pm - 4.30pm (8 hrs weekly)

With nearly 20 years of industry experience Andrew Kunzel has an expert understanding of 3D production requirements for films, games and television . Throughout this course he will demonstrate how to create production level models from specific 2D design artwork that will be provided. The course is designed to help 3D artists of all levels. However, dedication will be important as the workload is high, and you will be expected to complete each week's assignment on time. Topics like model topology, edge flow, loops, UV layout, 2D and 3D texture painting, UV texture stretching versus seams, model clean up, displacement/normal mapping, rendering and lighting turntables; will be covered over the duration of the course. Each week Andrew will demonstrate the production techniques live, using software like Autodesk Maya and Mudbox, and Adobe Photoshop. You will be able to follow the demos in class and ask questions. Homework will be reviewed during class in the each week.

CREATURE DESIGN FOR FILMS with NICK PILL

Rising Sun Pictures VFX Art Director, creature designer and matte painter Nick Pill takes you through the art of creature design for film in this 8 week course. This course teaches the fundamentals of creature design from silhouette, designing, digital painting and also ZBrush. Nick will focus on the use of design principles and how these theories should influence your choices as a concept artist and creature designer. Nick will cover topics of how to generate ideas, gather references and how to design and render your creatures. Nick will show you how these designs can be interpreted in a VFX studio environment and pipeline.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PAINTING & THEORY with SIMON SCALES

Video game environment designer, LEGO concept artist and matte painter Simon Scales takes you through the art of creating compelling digital art in this 8 week course. This course teaches the fundamentals of digital painting including colour theory and design theory. You will gain a thorough understanding of how to use Photoshop and a WACOM tablet. Simon will cover topics of how to generate ideas quickly, gather reference, paint interesting compositions and use perspective that help form the basis of fully realized digital paintings. Simon will then work with you put these into practice within your own work. The final few weeks will focus on lighting and colour and Simon helps you focus on creating artwork for your portfolio.

Dungeons & Dragons artist, Ned Rogers takes you through the art of creating environments for video games and movies. This course is for students that would really like to push their environment paintings to the next level. You will gain an understanding of how to use colour, light, mood and storytelling in your paintings. Ned will cover topics of how to generate ideas quickly, gather reference, composition, matte painting techniques and using perspective to fully realize your digital paintings. Using Photoshop you will learn many industry techniques for creating highly detailed production paintings. Ned will then work with you put these techniques into practice within your own work.

You will learn how to research, observe and use reference to build a visual vocabulary that you can then use in your own painting and designs. This class will help all students in any design field from characters, vehicles, or environments to understand what visual elements will work well regardless of the subject matter.

James Boorman is a freelance Motion Graphic Designer producing content for video, television, film and digital. For over 10 years James has produced high end motion design projects such as title sequences for The Babadook, 3News and kids series Sam Fox: Extreme Adventures as well as complete graphical commercial spots for Womadelaide and most recently a picture book trailer for Penguin. Through the course James will take you through principals of Motion Design, from design, composition, animation and typography in After Effects. Project outcome will include creating a 10-15 second teaser title sequence incorporating all of these principals that encompass Motion Design.

Rising Sun Pictures rigger Jared Embley will take you into the world of Maya rigging. Jared will cover topics such as inverse kinematics, joints, control objects, constraints, parenting and skinning. Through the 8 weeks you will learn how to rig a vehicle and a bipedal character. Students will take a modelled bipedal character and vehicle and articulate ready for animation using systems such as reverse foot setups, FK and IK switching, global scaling, space switching, stretchy IK and weighting painting.
