Art BOOT CAMP 1 will push your understanding of drawing and art fundamentals. Tim Mcburnie will take you through a series of intensive assignments aimed at developing your foundation skills. You will focus on learning Advanced Perspective, Anatomy, Form Drawing, Shading, Posing Characters, Lighting and Color Theory. The course is designed to help artists of all levels. However, dedication will be important as the workload is high, and you will be expected to complete each week's assignment on time. Regardless of your skill level, If you stick with it, your fundamental skills will improve and you will become more confident when dealing with the technical aspects of art. This course is the one to take if you are serious about working professionally as a commercial artist. Having a strong foundation is a key part of dealing with the daily challenges you will face when working on professional jobs. Tim works in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard Entertainment, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast.

Art BOOT CAMP 2 will build on the fundamentals from Bootcamp 1. Giving added complexity to the assignments. The course structure remains the same; but each week we delve deeper into our subject matter. International comic book artist Tim McBurnie takes you through the world of sketching, drawing and character design. Tim works in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast. In this 8 week class Tim will guide you through the the basics of drawing and character design. Topics will include perspective, drawing simple forms in 3d space and drawing in photoshop. There will also be a focus on designing and constructing your own characters. This course is aimed at beginners and will give you the perfect foundation for your art career.

EACH WEEK you will watch a demo of the instructor painting LIVE, paint along with the instructor and ask questions. After each class you will receive your homework assignment for the week and at the beginning of each class you will receive feedback on your work/assignments.

DESIGN FOUNDATIONS FOR GAMES & FILM with SIMON SCALES

Design foundations will explore of the world of design, drawing, painting and developing a stronger sense of visual language to implement into your own characters, environments, vehicles and mechs. You will learn different methods and styles of exploring design through a series of intensive assignments where you will learn topics such as: shape language, design principles, drawing for design, rendering principles and techniques. You will learn how to research, observe and use reference to build a visual vocabulary that you can then use in your own painting and designs. This class will help all students in any design field from characters, vehicles, or environments to understand what visual elements will work well regardless of the subject matter.

3D PRODUCTION MODELLING & TEXTURING STUDIO 1 & 2 with ANDREW KUNZEL

8 Weeks - Tuesday 12.30pm - 4.30pm & Thursday 12.30pm - 4.30pm (8 hrs weekly)

With nearly 20 years of industry experience Andrew Kunzel has an expert understanding of 3D production requirements for films, games and television . Throughout this course he will demonstrate how to create production level models from specific 2D design artwork that will be provided. The course is designed to help 3D artists of all levels. However, dedication will be important as the workload is high, and you will be expected to complete each week's assignment on time. Topics like model topology, edge flow, loops, UV layout, 2D and 3D texture painting, UV texture stretching versus seams, model clean up, displacement/normal mapping, rendering and lighting turntables; will be covered over the duration of the course. Each week Andrew will demonstrate the production techniques live, using software like Autodesk Maya and Mudbox, and Adobe Photoshop. You will be able to follow the demos in class and ask questions. Homework will be reviewed during class in the each week.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT FOR ANIMATION with JASON PAMMENT

This course is an exciting exploration of the world of layout, environment design and visual development with a focus on creating production art for animation. Students will be given a rough storyboard and will need to design a location that will work for that sequence. Focus will be placed on gathering reference, layout, storytelling, shape language and colour for animation. Jason will cover topics such as visual style, collecting real world reference and prop design. Starting with thumbnails, you will move onto creating a ‘blueprint’ for the environment and working on ways to ‘stage’ your set to work consistently from shot to shot. Finally you will be creating detailed drawings of your set and production paintings to set the atmosphere and emotion of the scene.

2D CHARACTER DESIGN & ANIMATION with ARI GIBSON

Ari Gibson is an Animator and Art Director and founder of boutique animation studio Mechanical Apple.  Ari has worked with a wide range of clients around the world including Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Sony. His business produces films, music videos, commercials and animated content for video games. Through the course Ari will take you through principles of drawing, designing and animating 2D characters in Photoshop.  Topics will include visual design for animation, designing graphic characters, creating dynamic animated sequences and taking a rough concept through to a fully animated character.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PAINTING & THEORY with SIMON SCALES

Video game environment designer, LEGO concept artist and matte painter Simon Scales takes you through the art of creating compelling digital art in this 8 week course. This course teaches the fundamentals of digital painting including colour theory and design theory. You will gain a thorough understanding of how to use Photoshop and a WACOM tablet. Simon will cover topics of how to generate ideas quickly, gather reference, paint interesting compositions and use perspective that help form the basis of fully realized digital paintings. Simon will then work with you put these into practice within your own work. The final few weeks will focus on lighting and colour and Simon helps you focus on creating artwork for your portfolio.

PRE-PRODUCTION DESIGN WITH DEANE TAYLOR

Deane Taylor began his career in Adelaide as a children’s show presenter. In 1978, while conducting an interview with the late William Hanna he was offered a position at the Hanna Barbera studios in Sydney, andhas worked in the animation industry both locally, and internationally ever since. As a layout artist, scene planner, background painter, art director, production designer, story artist and Director, he has been responsible for more than 400 hours of animation ranging from series through commercials and feature films in a variety of mediums. Some of these include Cow and Chicken, Ren and Stimpy, The Pink Panther and more recently Figaro pho. The most prestigious of his awards was the Hollywood ASIFA Annie award for his art direction of the Oscar nominated Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas. This class will cover topics such as: character design, idea generation, thumbnailing process, layout, scene planning and art direction.

3D ANIMATION with ANDREW KUNZEL

8 Weeks - Saturday mornings 10.00am - 1.00pm (3 hrs)

Over the last 5 years Andrew Kunzel has spent much of his time animating and also animation directing two television series for the ABC, Horace In Slow Motion and Figaro Pho. He has also animated in the films Scooby Doo, Ghost Ship and the Black Gates sequence in The Return of the King. Andrew will be demonstrating some of the fundamental principles of animation with an emphasis on how to make that process creative and fun.
We will be covering animation concepts like “key frames”, “timing and spacing”, “overlapping action”, as well as the more general story telling and acting performance skills plus the software skills needed in Maya. This course is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with some animation experience.”

Rising Sun Pictures rigger Jared Embley will take you into the world of Maya character rigging.Jared will cover topics such as inverse kinematics, joints, control objects, constraints, parenting andskinning. Through the 8 weeks you will learn how to rig a bipedal character. Students will take a modelled bipedal character and articulate ready for animation using systems such as reverse foot setups, FK and IK switching, global scaling, space switching, stretchy IK and weighting painting. Jared has 8 years professional VFX experience working on projects such as: The Hunger Games, Battle Los Angeles, The Golden CompassThe Wolverine, I, Frankenstein, The Seventh Son and many more.

Rising Sun Pictures Jared Embley will take you into the world of modelling environments and props in Maya. Jared will use a project-based approach as he covers the basics of modelling, looking at commonly used tools, and talking about some time-saving tips and production techniques. You'll learn how to organize your model into hierarchies and keep your scene clean and efficient. You'll use several commonly used modelling tools in depth to quickly create high resolution, film quality models. Once you have a better understanding of how these tools work together, you’ll be able to create your own modelling solutions and create a work flow that’s comfortable to you.
