Introduction to Character Design

April 11-12 2024

MELBOURNE & ONLINE

Interested in Character Design but felt stuck on a backstory? Or have too many stories and want to know how to break things down for just one scene? Over an easily digestible two day workshop follow Concept Artist Rebecca Oborn as we adventure through the visual stories we tell in Character Design.

Learn about creating a brief, must know development techniques and how to marry your characters with their scenery.

Day 1

The first day will be focused on creating your character and incorporating storytelling in your design.

  • Design your own short story and set a brief
  • Sketching and Thumbnails
  • Essential Anatomy Tips
  • A Dash of Colour Theory
  • Cell Shading

Day 2

After we establish a character, next comes setting them in their scene. Everyone’s character will be different so while the focus is on creating an illustration that tells an appealing story and has good fundamentals, the day is flexible to suit the briefs we’ve made and help answer those burning questions!

Hardware Requirements

    • If you don't have any of the above items, a sketchbook and pencils, markers will be okay, but be mindful that Rebecca will use digital rendering techniques using Photoshop.
    • iPads may be used, although they don't run Photoshop very well. You can draw and paint with them using Procreate or take notes if you wish.

    Software Requirements
      • Adobe Photoshop - You can take up a 7-day trial if you haven't used it before and would like to try it out. It will ask you for payment details when you sign up, however if you don't wish to continue using it after the workshop you can just cancel it. Alteratively you may wish to use another painting or drawing program such as Manga studio, Krita, Corel Painter, Heavypaint, or Gimp. All demonstrations will be done using Photoshop.
