Intro to Creature Design
This workshop teaches the fundamentals of creature design for games and films. Intro to Creature Design focuses on learning both 2D and 3D skills. You will start with sketching your characters in 2D and your instructor will guide you through this process, with a strong focus on the design of your creature. This workshop will then move into the 3D with the instructor teaching you how to sculpt and design, colour and render your creature in ZBrush and Photoshop.
This course is aimed at beginners and will give you the perfect foundation for your art career.
Each week you will watch a live demo of the instructor sculpting and modelling, you are welcome to sculpt/model along with the instructor and ask questions. After each class you will receive your homework assignment for the week, and at the beginning of each class you will receive feedback on your work.
Topics that will be covered throughout the 12 week workshop:
- Designing a creature.
- How to use research to develop your designs.
- Introduction to Zbrush.
- Sculpting primary, secondary and tertiary forms within Zbrush.
- How to refine your creature designs.
- Incorporating photos and textures.
- Using colour.
- Photoshop techniques.
The hardware requirements for the workshop are:
- Laptop (MacBook Pro or i7 PC laptop with 16GB RAM are recommended).
- Wacom tablet. Any size is good.
- Notepad and pens/pencils for note-taking.
Bryan Wynia, who previously worked at ID software, Sony Santa Monica and Naughty Dog, contributing some of the most horrific monsters that have graced video games such as Doom, God of War and the Unchartered Series. Bryan now works as lead Character Artist at TripWire Interactive, he's a master of his craft. Some of his clients include, Legacy Effects, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, The Aaron Sims Company, Gentle Giant Studios, and Masked Avenger Studios. His work has also been featured in Famous Monsters of Filmland, Imagine FX, 3D Artist, 3D World, and Ballistic Publishing's Essence: Creatures.
